This course is designed to present the basic dynamics, the effects and the consequences of social movements or mass movements that emerge as an instance of collective behavior, through social sciences in an interdisciplinary way. The purpose of this course is to study the driving forces and dynamics of new social movements, and the interaction between the individual, the society and the state in an international level, by discussing the political, philosophical, sociological, economic and cultural foundations of social movements. In this context, historical and contemporary examples will be examined as well as theoretical approaches explaining social movements. Another purpose of the course is that unlike peaceful social movements, it is to analyze the collective organization of political violence through the radicalization processes of individuals in the light of theories of social movements such as the Resource Mobilization and the New Social Movements Theories. Accordingly, examining the phenomenon of extremism and radicalization that can be transformed into violent acts as a result of a certain process due to the factors as such ideology, belonging and identity is another aim of the course by taking the formation processes of collective political violence organizations, social and political conditions, organizational dynamics and dynamics of individual participation into consideration.
